Taking Notice of Manners and Etiquette

A Friendly Day

I was at the checkout of a grocery store yesterday enjoying friendly and polite service from the young cashier.  I complimented her on her packing skills obviously done with care.  Sadly, this is no longer the "norm".  She thanked me and said how nice people were today and said that one gentleman in the line had paid for the lady's groceries who was ahead of him!  I commented that maybe he was flirting with her - she said that the lady was very old. Awww - isn't that sweet?  What a lovely act of kindness.

Looking Good .....

I was in a takeout coffee shop yesterday morning and couldn't help but notice a man at the counter.  He was dressed so beautifully in casual business attire - he really stood out and was looking good, very good.

He looked to be in his mid-forties with a nicely trimmed goatee and great hair - also nicely trimmed but not too short.  He was wearing a white dress shirt, a classy but quiet tie, charcoal grey dress pants with a black leather belt and black leather shoes, clean and polished.

I could see that others noticed him too.  He was looking professional, approachable and just plain "good".

In front a me, another youngish man slouched past, eating his breakfast sandwich while walking, wearing a baseball cap, loose fitting, (baggy), shorts to his knees and dirty sneakers.  What a contrast.

"Casual" has gone too far, way too far - don't you think ?  I know it was a weekend - but have some pride folks. Casual can still be clean and nice ..... without the dress shirt and tie.

It was just interesting for me as an Etiquette trainer to watch the looks the gentleman was getting.  And yes ...  he was cute.  Mmm. :)

A little fun with "proper attire !!

Instead of "dress-down" Fridays for charity ~ why not try "dress-up" days once a month fashioned after Madmen 1960's office attire !

The Joke's on Us

Our reputation for being polite as Canadians has been the butt of many a good humored joke.  I recently heard that actor Vince Vaughan was being interviewed on the Ellen Show and she was asking after his little daughter, who is still a toddler.  Vince replied that his wife is Canadian so they didn't have to teach her to say "thank you" ... she came that way.  Ellen apparently asked if she had said "I'm sorry" yet !!!

So it appears that we still have it !  Lets not lose it !

Have a nice day ... wink, wink.

Welcome !

Welcome to my Business Etiquette Blog.

Manners and etiquette are proven keys to success in the business world.  Such a simple statement ... and don't we all know our manners ?

Well, our fast-paced world laced with electronic methods of communication has robbed us of the very basic methods of communicating with manners, respect and kindness.  My business is all about helping us preserve the all important human element in a civil society.

I am passionate about this topic and am fortunate in seeing the results when we train, (or re-train) adults in those elementary "rules" of respect, civility. manners and etiquette.

So, stay tuned for new ideas, thoughts, experiences and more, on this, my Blog !
